Spartan Race isn't new to the world. They've been around for over a decade now. However, thousands of new people take on Spartan Race events every single year. So the question we're going to answer for you today is this: Are you fit enough for Spartan Race?

The question comes with a bit of nuance. Let's look first at whether or not you are fit enough to complete a Spartan Sprint in the Open Wave. The Open Wave category simply means that you are racing against yourself and yourself only. You go at whatever pace you can, and if you can't complete an obstacle, you simply do a penalty lap or burpees and then you move on with the race.
We started in the Open Waves at Spartan Race; having fun and testing our fitness. Then we decided to make Obstacle Course Racing our focus in training and in coaching. We've been the 3,000th finisher, and the 3rd finisher. We know every step of the process because we took every step. We'd love to coach you through the process. No matter what your goal: finishing the event confidently or reaching for the podium, we'd love to get you started today with expert coaching and programming. Click the title above to learn more.
Open Waves:
If you can walk 3-4 miles, and you can crawl for a few minutes and climb over some low barriers, you can complete a Spartan Sprint. Now, that doesn't mean you'll be able to complete all of the obstacles, but you can certainly finish the race. The speed at which you complete the race, and the number of obstacles you are able to complete, will be completely dependent on your fitness level beyond what was listed just above.

Age Group:
If you can run for 5+ miles at an 8:30 - 8:50 average pace per mile, and if you can complete Monkey Bars, Climb A Rope, and do a few Pullups, you are very likely ready to try the Age Group category at Spartan Race. Of course, some things will be course/terrain dependent, but if you're fit enough to do those things listed in this paragraph, you should give Age Group a shot.

Elite:
If you can run 5+ miles at a 7:30 - 8:00 average pace per mile, and you have great upper body strength and obstacle skill, you should absolutely sign up for Elite and give it a try. Again, the terrain/elevation/etc. will be a factor in how you place, and so will your familiarity with the different obstacles and experience completing them (more experience should mean faster completion times), but you should definitely give Elite a try if you fit this description.

Ultimately, most people can complete a Spartan Race. Not everyone will complete every obstacle, and not everyone will have a very fast time. However, that's not the point. The point is to get out there, do the event, test your fitness, find out where you stand, and walk away from the race ready to improve yourself physically, mentally, emotionally, or in any other way needed.
Thanks for reading, and we hope to see you out at a race one day!
